An open letter to Chinese authorities asking for thorough investigation
A hundred Beijing University graduates signed and published an open letter addressed to the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party and the China State Council. The letter asks for a thorough and transparent investigation in the unspeakable sufferings of a woman named Yang X Xia. She was believed to have been abducted on her way home from Nanchong Elementary School in Nanchong, Sichuan at the age of 12 more than 24 years ago. She was forced into a marriage with a poor man named Dong Zhi Min in a village near Xuzhou City. She was believed to have been raped and given births to 8 children at a time when China's official policy allowed only 1 child per family. She lost all but only 2 teeth, which were believed to have been pulled out by men to prevent her from biting while being raped.
The extreme sorry fate of the abducted woman is rumored to have angered Peng Li Yuan, wife of Xi Jinping. Peng Li Yuan is the UN World Envoy for advancing the well being and education of Women and Girls in the world. Peng is said to feel frustrated and told people to 'investigate whoever trying to stop the investigation'. She is said to have told people 'otherwise I have no face in front of the world and I can not go overseas anymore'.
Whe named the UN's World Envoy for Women and Girls in Paris, Peng Li Yuan said, “A child’s first teacher is its mother”. “Making sure that mothers are educated means we can lift more people out of poverty and build a more inclusive and sustainable society.”
Yang X Xia was discovered by a social worker in a shabby unheated mud shed with no door on January 28, 2022. She was seen wearing thin clothes on a cold winter day. At a time when Beijing wants people around the world to celebrate the Winter Olympics, the topic of abducted women and Yang X Xia's brutal sufferings have caused wide empathy and anger among Chinese in and out of China.
The Open Letter by the Beijing University students says:
We are 100 students of Beijing University. We are concerned about our nation's well-being regardless of our social status. Many people are concerned about the miserable sufferings of the abducted woman in Xuzhou, Yang X Xia. As builders of the New Era China Dream, we feel the pains and sufferings of the abuducted woman as if they were our own. We are upset and angry. We can not eat and sleep well.
Abducting women and children is a criminal act. It causes the breakup and demise of countless families, which is absolutely inconsistent with the blueprint of socialist construction of our nation in the New Era. It is also a naked challenge and ruthless destruction of the happy lives of all people.
The 4 explanations of this abduction by the Authorities of Xuzhou government are inconsistent, having too
many loopholes, and not credible at all.
We are pleading to the CCP leadership and the State Council to provide authoritative answers.
1. Adopt a just, credible and transparent process in investigating the true identity of Yang X Xia in addressing people's concerns and provide the truth with the people.
2. To uphold justice for the people, identify and punish those who committed malfeasance or misconduct in Xu Zhou government, punish those who participated in or caused such sufferings by Yang X Xia during her more than 20 years of forced marriage.
3. Investigate all abductions of women and children, provide release and relief to the victims who are still being held against their will and mistreated.
4. We propose to initiate revision to the current Criminal Law to provide sufficient punishment to abduction acts and to end such crimes.
