Why the Chinese Are Angry
During the Beijing Winter Olympics, 2 Chinese women caused most controversy. One is an elite athlete Eileen Gu featured on State TV. She won 2 gold medals for China in the Beijing Winter Olympics and got commercial endorsements worth US$31 million. Many Chinese found it hard to relate to Gu, as she was born and raised in America.
However, many more Chinese are drawn to the heart breaking story and suffering of another woman. She is a mother of 8 children. She said her name was Li Ying, and bears a strong resemblance to a school girl who was missing at the age of 14 in Nanchong, Sichuan Province over 20 years ago. She was apparently abducted and sold as a sex slave to a Dong family in a rural village near Xuzhou city in Zhejiang Province. The Dong family abused Li Ying who fought back. Abusive men pulled out all but 2 of her teeth. Over 20 years, the woman gave births to 8 children by different men. She was seen chained to an unheated shed wearing only thin clothes on a cold day in late January.
